_1970s John Booth, MD Decca_ In 1947, The British Decca company decided to set up their first West African recording studio, in Accra, Ghana, launching its West Africa series. This was prompted by the pre-war success of companies like His Masters Voice (HMV), whose African JZ series had done well. In Decca West Africa’s first year (1947) 46,000 copies of 23 different West African vernacular records were sold. By 1952, Decca (WA) had recorded and produced 100 different 78 rpm singles. By 1959 they began to market Long -playing (LP) albums From the 1950s - 1970s, Decca (WA) artists included E.C Arinze, I.K Dairo, Ebenezer Obey, Haruna Ishola, E. T Mensah’s TemposKing Bruce’s Black Beats, Dr Gyasi’s Noble Kings and the Ramblers. The success of Decca in the 1950s led to the construction of a new studio in Accra and a twice yearly dispatch from Britain to Lagos of two engineers with portable equipment to record Nigerian artists. By the early 1960s Decca was selling 250,000 records and Nigeria became its biggest market. As a result, a recording studio was opened in Nigeria. In the 1970s with Ghanas economic decline and Nigerias oil boom Decca decided to make its base Lagos. Decca (WA) was successfully running a 16 - track studio there. The Nigerian indigenization decrees of 1972 and 1977 led to shareholdings by both Decca West Africa and local Nigerian owners including Chief Moshood Abiola and later on Ebenezer Obey. When Decca was taken over in 1979 by Polygram, Decca West African rights were sold to Afrodisia.
