U.S. civil rights hero and congressman, John Robert Lewis has died at age 80

Lillian Miles Lewis

John Lewis with his wife Lillian Miles Lewis…….she had a lifelong interest in Africa.

In 1960 she came to Nigeria and taught in various schools. After a few years she left to return back to America in the mid 1960s she returned back to Nigeria as a Peace Volunteer and taught for another two years in Yaba.

In 1967 at a New Year’s Eve party in Atlanta she was introduced to her future husband, John. R. Lewis.

By that time he was already a civil rights activist, and she urged him to go into politics ”to make even more changes in the world” till the end she was his closest political advisor.

On December 31, 2012, after a long illness, Lillian Miles Lewis died on the 45th anniversary of the day she and John met. She was 73
