October 1, 1960. The Nigeria High Commission

Marking the first day of Nigerian independence. The new green and white flag flying at Nigeria House, Northumberland Avenue, London.

The night before (September 30th) an awesome celebration took place at the Royal Festival Hall.

There was cheering and dancing at the stroke of midnight when the country officially became independent.

Princess Alexandra of Kent (25 December 1936 – ) represented her cousin Queen Elizabeth in Nigeria for ceremonies marking Nigeria’s Independence from Britain in October 1960.

She is seen dancing here with Omoba, Sir Adetokunbo Ademola ( 1 February 1906 – 29 January 1993) the first Nigerian Chief Justice of the Federation (1958 – 1972)

He was also the son of Oba Ladapo Samuel Ademola II, the Alake of Abeokuta
